Title: In Katrina's Wake
Abstract: Students will read the article "In Katrina's Wake," review geographhic information system (GIS) maps of the region identifying locations for hazardous materials, and discuss the variety of environmental health hazards resulting from Hurrican Katrina. Students then write an essay stating whether they think it is safe for people to return to live in this region before cleanup is complete and whether they believe individuals or the government should make the choice about if and when to return. An integrated lesson, this lesson extends beyond traditional science content and can be used in various academic disciplines.
