Title: A Case Study of Environmental, Health & Safety Issues Involving the Burlington, MA Public School System

Abstract: This case study, prepared by Todd H. Dresser of the Burlington (MA) Board of Health, details an extensive review of environmental, and health and safety (EHS) issues involving the Burlington, Massachusetts public school system, which began in 1992. The case study is intended for use as a guide by parents, staff, and public officials when reviewing EHS issues in their school system. Included are sections on: chemical management and usage; asbestos management; indoor air quality; pesticide usage; mercury management and exposure prevention; radioactive materials; fire prevention; pollution prevention; hazardous waste generation and management; formaldehyde; radon; chemical fume hoods; eye washes and deluge showers; safety equipment; hazards/issues by department; spill and emergency response plans; ceramic kilns; underground storage tanks; lasers in the classroom; and discharges to sanitary drains.
